Service to Differently Abled Children :
“Disabilities in children cannot be preventive but identifying them, giving correct
measures and making them self sufficient and productive is the duty of a society.”
Dr.Rajan’s social work extends beyond children and youth. His care and concern for the physically and mentally disabled is commendable. He has worked with many organizations to conduct camps and develop strategies for the rehabilitation of these children.
POLIO CORRECTIVE SURGERY DURING 1986-87
In the year 1986 with the help of All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai (a central Government Institute), systematic Polio corrective surgery camp was organized at the Municipal Corporation hospital, Dharwad. This was possible because of the personal contact of Dr.Rajan with Dr B D Athani, Deputy Director of the Institute. The whole team of experts visited Dharwad four times to complete the disability camp. First stage Camp – Was held in September, 1986. Mayor Shri P.H.Pawar and Deputy Mayor Shri S.D.Patil inaugurated the camp. More than 500 patients from Dharwad, North Canara and Bijapur attended the camp and were examined. Around 100 patients were chosen for corrective surgery. 2nd Stage Camp – Was held on 17, 18, 19th October 1986. Padma Vibhushan Shri Veerendra Hegde from Dharmasthala visited the camp and blessed the patients. 80 patients who needed major surgery and other minor corrections attended this camp. The measurements for boots and calipers was taken, plaster cast put and patients requiring surgery followed up with the local orthopedic surgeons from Dharwad. 3rd Stage Camp – Boots and calipers was prepared at Bombay as there was no facility in Dharwad area. These boots and callipers were then distributed to all. Final stage – This was a follow up camp and was held on 17, 18 January 1987. All patients who received the calipers and boots and those who were operated upon for lengthening procedure etc were followed up and examined at this camp. This camp was done as a CSR activity, in association with Bharuka Textiles and its head Shri ML Agarwal.POLIO CORRECTIVE SURGERIES DURING 1988-99
When Dr.Rajan was the Rotary Governor Elect, he signed an MOU with the Rotary Club in California USA along with 3 other governors for free polio corrective surgeries camp in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Dharwad. This was a major matching grant project to conduct 2000 polio corrective surgeries. Each area was given a target of 500 Polio Corrective Surgeries. The project was conducted successfully with the help of local orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists. Around 500 children from Dharwad, Gadag, Belgaum, Panjim, Ratnagiri received the benefit of the global initiative. The effort of this project was highly appreciated by Minister, Govt.of Karnataka Shri A. M. Hindasgeri and the then Minister and MLA Shri Chandrakant Bellad who witnessed the camp.REHABILITATION OF MENTALLY CHALLENGED IN 1990s (SOUMANASAYA)
Dharwad mental hospital, now known as Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (DIMHANS) is the oldest hospital in this part of Karnataka (>150 yrs old). After receiving treatment and recovering many patients go back to their native towns. However, for a few patients requiring longer treatment and prolonged stay in the hospital, finding an occupation and acceptance in society in their home towns is difficult. In order to help overcome this, likeminded people came together for the start of a rehabilitation centre called “Soumanasya”. This is an NGO with Deputy Commissioner and CEO of Zilla Panchayat and Chief of Mental Hospital as the head since the hospital is a Government Institution. The aim of this rehabilitation centre was to train the mentally challenged in simple activities that they could continue to carry on as occupation in their home towns. Recovering patients were taught to prepare writing chalk, mats, shawls, envelopes and other useful household items. They were sold in the market and the profit was given to the inmates. Thus, these mentally challenged persons were rehabilitated and were independent to take up these activities as occupation on their own after discharge. Dr.Rajan was a founder joint secretary and was on the advisory board for around 10 years. Soumanasya continues to do well and is a boon to mentally challenged.HANDICAPPED CAMP 1987
A leadership training camp for the disabled children was organized during 1987. This was aimed to increase the inner confidence of disabled. The children were given career guidance, HRD training, financial assistance and guidance to overcome their disabilities.
